Lafayette County Literacy Council's mission is to improve the quality of life in Oxford and Lafayette County through literacy and reading. The Council’s four priorities are to provide professionally developed and administered literacy education programs, promote a love of reading to children and families, serve as a literacy resource and information clearinghouse for the community and become an excellent organization with which to work and volunteer.
As part of the Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) program, volunteers will coach adult learners who need help improving their reading skills for 2 hours each week. 1.5 hours will be spent in one-on-one coaching sessions, with the remaining 30 minutes used for planning the next week’s session. The minimum coaching requirement is six months. Volunteer coaches must complete an online application. Training is provided. Help an adult learner prepare to take the GED: Training is provided, and coaches must commit to working with a learner for two hours each week for six months. Volunteer coaches should be patient and flexible with their learners. Coaches are also expected to have strong skills in at least one of the subjects on the GED: math, science, language arts, and social studies.
